Do Visa and Mastercard have an unfair advantage?
Fermé

When you think about debit and credit cards, the two most popular issuers may come to mind: Visa and Mastercard. These two companies have dominated the market for quite some time, thanks to their versatility and flexibility - however, is everyone happy?

With the current pandemic, many local and chain businesses are only accepting card payments but feel like they are throttled by the steep fees enforced by the card processors. Retail groups in the United Kingdom say that the costs charged by these payment firms have doubled in the previous two years.

BRC's Andrew Cregan said that "it is vital that the government takes action to tackle excessive card costs," because otherwise, retailers would be forced to pass such costs onto their customers, with credit card bills rising by another £40 a year.

At the same time, it goes without saying that card payments over a vast array of benefits to all, including convenient on-the-go payments, increased security, and better protection coverage among others - however are they abusing their position? An important thing to remember is that, big contracts with the best deals are usually available only to the biggest retailers and players in the market. On the other hand, independent retailers could suffer the most, with increasing payment processing overheads worsening their already-embattled position.

What do you think about this?

Do you think that the top card issuers in the world have an unfair advantage due to the lack of competition?

Are they charging too much? Would you be angry if businesses and retailers passed the increased cost of card payments over to you?

I'm not happy, but they are the most trusted brands out there. Like most institutions during the pandemic, they should relook at their cost/fee structure

I do think they charge too much but I also think they need to offer more ways to pay!

I think given the current pandemic circumstances, card issuers should lower their fees. I think they make more than enough money. Yes, the top card issuers do have an advantage as there is not much competition out there. They are charging too much and there is no way that I as consumer is going to pay for it. They must start lowering their costs and think about their especially the small businesses that do not need the high cost.

Yes, but doesn't any monopoly of a particular brand have an unfair advantage in general? Sometimes we don't have a choice and have to make it work, even if it means lessening our budgets unfortunately.

I do think they are charging too much. I would be upset if the charges were passed onto me with my purchases. This just highlights the fact that companies without competition will push their luck to see how far they can go to use the love that people have for convenience.
