Samantha Cristoforetti - Italian Austronaut/ Engineer
Fermé

She’s perhaps one of the least known women who has literally seen the whole world. She’s been to space and back and was the woman who spent the longest consecutive amount of days in the big blue sky. Because she should be heard and celebrated, we present you with Samantha Cristoforetti’s story.

Samantha was born on the 26th of April 1977, in Milan, Italy. During her childhood she already had a passion for exploration, and went on an exchange to the United States, which at that point in time was incredibly rare. After returning from this experience, she completed her secondary education and moved to Germany to study mechanical engineering and aerospace propulsion.

In between and after Germany she studied in France, Russia and her home country, Italy. Needless to say, Samantha has shown an incredible interest in education. After completing her education, she continued breaking glass ceilings as she became one of the first women to become a lieutenant and fighter pilot in the Italian air force.

In 2009 Cristoforetti started her ventures into the greater universe, when she was selected as an astronaut in 2009 by the European space agency. As being an astronaut is an extremely demanding job, she trained for more than three years before she was selected in 2012 for a long-duration mission to the ISS set for 2014.

After embarking on this intense adventure into outer space, Cristoforetti actually became the recordholder for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight by a European astronaut as she spent 199 days and 16 hours off planet earth.
After staying on earth for a while, Cristoforetti became a mother of a little girl in 2016. And as if all of this was not impressive enough, Cristoforetti speaks 5 languages and is currently studying another, namely Chinese.

As one of the few women, she received the highest-ranking honour of the republic of Italy in 2015, as she was ‘’followed with affectation and love by all Italians’’ according the then president Mattarella. It’s pretty clear to us why the Italians love this inspiring woman, and we sincerely hope she’s inspired you as well.

Did you know about Samantha Cristoforetti before today?
If you could, would you ever go to outer space?
